About Trident

A carrier built to answer the phone.

Trident Insurance Company writes three lines — personal auto, workers’ compensation and the CPP business package — through independent agents who can reach a real underwriter. We chose three products instead of thirty so that every one of them gets proper attention.

Our story

Three lines, one underwriting desk, one renewal date.

Trident was chartered in 1987 in Wilmington, North Carolina, to write personal auto for coastal drivers that larger carriers were pulling back from after a string of hurricane seasons. The decision that shaped everything since was to stay small enough that an underwriter could still know the agents who sent us business.

CPP, our business package, followed in the 1990s once it was clear that Main Street retailers, farms and contractors needed one policy instead of five. Workers’ compensation came next, built on NCCI class-based rating so it could expand state by state without reinventing the rate structure each time.

We are still headquartered at 1 Harbour Point in Wilmington. The underwriting desk, the claims team and the actuarial staff who build our rates all sit in the same building.

Financial strength

Strong enough to pay a large claim, and rated to say so.

Trident holds an A− (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best and files statutory financial statements with every state in which it writes.

$2MNet retention per occurrence before reinsurance

Reinsurance is placed annually through a panel of A-rated global reinsurers on an excess-of-loss basis, retaining the first $2 million of any single occurrence net. Catastrophe coverage for the North Carolina auto book and the Oklahoma CPP farm and property section is placed separately, sized to a 1-in-250-year modeled event.

Distribution

We do not sell directly, except where it matters to.

Personal auto can be quoted on this site, but every policy is still issued through the agent of your choice. CPP and workers’ compensation are written exclusively through appointed independent agents, because both need a conversation about the risk before anyone quotes a price.

  1. An agent submits the risk

Application, loss runs and any supplemental questionnaires go straight to an underwriter, not a queue.

  2. A named underwriter reviews it

The same person who quotes the account also has the authority to bind it, inside their granted limits.

  3. The agent binds and services the policy

Endorsements, audits and renewals all run through the agency relationship, not a Trident call center.
